Malesani: Roma tougher than Inter
Alberto Malesani’s Udinese ended Inter’s 17-match winning streak, but the Coach believes Roma will provide an even tougher test.
“This will be an even more difficult game for us than the one against Inter. We are facing a Giallorossi side at the top of their form, charged up with enthusiasm and pushed on by their extraordinary fans at the Olimpico,” said the Friulani boss.
“We must be careful not to fall into their trap, as the counter-attack is where they are at their most dangerous. If Luciano Spalletti does decide to rotate the squad, it won’t make much difference, because Roma’s play is now so well-worked that anyone who goes out there knows what to do.”
Malesani took over from Giovanni Galeone mid-season and his squad has been inconsistent at best, suffering a shock 1-0 home defeat to Empoli just days after stopping the all-conquering Inter.
“I think this period in the pre-match ritiro has done us good, allowing the side to work together, rest and talk things over. Obviously we cannot make this course of action an automatic choice every time we lose a game, but the team is definitely improving.”
The club was so angry at that setback that the players have been locked down in a Press silence as well as the training camp stay.
“It is a shame that the lads cannot tell you about how they remember and respect Luciano Spalletti from his time here. I know that they still talk about him fondly.”
Spalletti complacency warning
Roma are the toast of Europe after their demolition job on Lyon, but Luciano Spalletti warns not to get complacent against Udinese.
“I don’t want to see any slips in concentration, because this will be a very difficult game,” said the Coach.
“Let us not forget Udinese will be extra motivated at facing Roma. The points we have are not enough to be sure of second place. Physically we are fine, but it is the psychological aspect that makes the difference.”
The Giallorossi shocked favourites Lyon with a 2-0 victory in France midweek to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
Spalletti is expected to field the same starting XI with the exception of Matteo Ferrari for Cristian Chivu, who had his nose fractured by Fred’s elbow. A UEFA investigation into the incident has been opened.
“I am confident my players are experienced enough to spot the dangers in this match. A little bit of relaxation is almost inevitable are some games, but we cannot afford to be complacent.”
Christian Panucci is still out with flu, while Alberto Aquilani and Gilberto Martinez are long-term injuries.
It is a special game for Spalletti, who was in charge of Udinese for many years.
“I am facing some lads who gave me a great deal in our time together, proving they can be important in this football world. President Giampaolo Pozzo is a great leader and I learned from him.”
